Bird cages are fitted over the chimney pot to prevent birds — particularly jackdaws and starlings — from entering and nesting inside the flue. Unlike a standard cowl, a bird cage is fully enclosed with a fine mesh that keeps all birds out while still allowing the flue to ventilate correctly.
